From 3 October, Museum Panorama Mesdag will open the first major Dutch retrospective on the Norwegian-Dutch artist Betzy Akersloot-Berg (1850-1922).
Betzy Akersloot-Berg was a pioneer, a world traveller, and one of Europe’s most important female marine and landscape painters of her time. “Remarkable boldness, individuality and strength": this is how critics described her daring style as early as 1890.
From the rugged Norwegian coastline to the beaches of Scheveningen and Vlieland, Akersloot-Berg constantly sought the power of the sea, light, and changing weather. Her strong brushwork and impressive seascapes made a deep impression on the Dutch press, which mentioned her in the same breath as Hendrik Willem Mesdag.
